What a strike-location heat map reveals that ball flight numbers alone can't tell you.
Launch monitor data tells you what the ball did after it left the clubface — ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, and dispersion. Impact location mapping tells you why, by tracking exactly where on the face the ball made contact on every single swing.
How Strike Location Affects Everything Else
Strike location has a direct, measurable effect on nearly every other number on the launch monitor. Strikes low on the face tend to increase spin rate and reduce ball speed due to a lower effective loft and reduced energy transfer. Strikes high on the face typically reduce spin and can increase launch angle. Toe and heel strikes introduce gear effect — a curving spin axis that can send the ball offline even on an otherwise well-aimed swing.
This means two swings with nearly identical clubhead speed and attack angle can produce noticeably different ball flights purely because of where on the face contact occurred.
What a Heat Map Shows Over a Full Session
Rather than looking at a single impact mark, we track strike location across dozens of swings during a session, building a heat map that shows your typical strike pattern rather than a single data point. A tight cluster near the center of the face indicates consistent contact; a spread pattern toward the toe, heel, high, or low face reveals a tendency that's often invisible to the golfer, since strike location isn't something most players can feel accurately in real time.
Golfers are notoriously unreliable at self-reporting where they strike the ball on the face — the heat map almost always shows a different pattern than what the golfer expects.
How This Changes Fitting Recommendations
A consistent low-face strike pattern often points toward a length or lie angle adjustment rather than a loft change, since posture and setup frequently drive strike height more than swing mechanics alone. A toe-biased pattern might suggest checking lie angle in the other direction, or considering a head with a different center of gravity to reduce the gear-effect curve those strikes produce.
In driver fittings specifically, impact location mapping helps us select head designs with MOI and CG placement suited to your actual strike tendency, rather than assuming center-face contact that may not reflect your real swing.
